Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain rulings from the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
