This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government. A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties. "Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed. The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics. Terms of the New Political Partnership According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved. Wider Government Consultations Taking Place In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising. Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
