Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
